Area Board of Directors

The Area Board is the governing body of The Durham Center.  It engages in comprehensive planning, budgeting, approval of all budget amendments, ensuring the provision of and monitoring of community-based mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse services for eligible Durham County citizens.  The Board assures that services contracted by The Durham Center meet the rules of the NC Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary.

The Area Board is the appointing authority for the area director.

The Durham County Board of County Commissioners appoints the Area Board members who serve a term of four years.  Board openings are advertised in the Herald-Sun and on the Durham County Web site.  Durham County citizens submit applications for Area Board membership through the Durham County Clerk of Courts Office to the Durham County Board of County Commissioners’ office.

The Area Board meetings, which are open to the public, are held the first Thursday of the month at 4:00 pm at 501 Willard Street.  No advance registration is required.   The Area Board asks that all visitors sign the register book to record their attendance.  To make public comments, you must sign up on a sheet provided with the attendance register when you arrive.  There is a specific time on the agenda for public comments.
